I love this first reading story about Elijah and the false prophets. A Story about how Elijah proved that our God was the real God by the fire coming down to consume the sacrifice and altar even in the midst of being soaked with water, winning the contest of who the real God is.
In the Gospel, Jesus said he did not come to abolish the law and prophets, but to fulfill them. We spoke about this on Monday. Until Jesus came, the prophets tried to teach the people this very thing, about living by fulfilling the 10 Commandments, not just following them.
Living them as guidelines for ultimate unconditional love. Getting back to the first reading, the false gods of the false prophets could not teach them a thing.
They were fake, not alive, not real. The real God taught us how to live by being one of us.
In the contest, to prove our God was the real and true God, the altar burst into fire when doused with water. If we live the way Jesus taught, fire from heaven will come down and consume our altar. The altar of our hearts and lives.
Others will be just as amazed at this contest, because they will see us on fire for the love of God and on fire with the love of God alive in us.
So in essence they will see us on fire for others, living love alive, living the 10 Commandments alive. In this way we will be the living Word of God in union with Jesus.
