When King Josiah heard the book of the law read, he tore his garments. He did this because he knew, he realized that God's people were accountable to obey God's Word whether they cared enough to know it or not. Therefore he realized that God's people were not obeying God's Word and thereby were under condemnation. Therefore, in deep sorrow for sin, as was customary in the day for deep sorrow or shame or repentance, he tore his clothing.
We live in a time with the very same situations. Many people have disobeyed and disobey God's Word. Some because they write it off to man-made writings and think they are not really from God. This is scary because they intentionally are turning from God’s commands. Others because they do not know God’s commands or Word because they fail to read it, or learn it, or come to church. More concerning is those that claim it is not really what God is like. They fail to understand God and His seriousness.
We should also have a fearful expectation of judgment. Obviously, we are here on a weekday because we want to know God and His word more deeply, and doing added devotion.
But there are many people around us, and even many of our Sunday churchgoers that fall into one of these categories, and we our self might at times write off God’s Word, not taking it as seriously as we should.
In the New Testament, Jesus told us to not tear our clothes, but tear open, rend our hearts.
Let us rend our hearts so we know His Word and commands to the fullest, and even most importantly, teach them to others as King Josiah did.
