What an awesome Gospel we heard today. What is happening here? There is a huge crowd of 5000 men so at least 10,000 – 20,000 people in total when you count the women and children. Jesus says to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for all these people to eat?’ Philip does not know what to say, so he compares it as fast as he can calculate, to how many days wages would be needed.
It is a ridiculous question, and a ridiculous answer. Of course, they could not go out and buy the food, no one would have that much food on hand. This shows what a great practical guy Jesus was, He jokes around in a sense. As we all know, we have a way of joking at times to get a point across. This was what Jesus was doing. He knew there was no way practically to achieve this. He wanted to see Philip’s answer. He was teaching complete trust. He was teaching how these people came to Him to be nourished spiritually and they trusted in Him.
They were not worried about the food, although they were hungry and had not eaten. They were following in complete Faith and Trust. When we do this, Jesus assures us that He takes care of us and he proves it in this passage. Philip tries to be practical, but Andrew is being trusting with in practicality. He says there is a boy here with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Ok, so now what the heck are 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish going to do for such a large crowd?
It is not the practical side but the deeper meaning. If you remember Andrew is the first to introduce Peter to Jesus and says we have found the messiah. Andrew believes in the Lord, so now He is bringing practicality and reality into Trust.
Basically he is saying, ‘Well Jesus, Here is 5 loaves and 2 fish. We began it, now you do the rest.’ This is TRUST. We do our part and if we do it in faith, Jesus takes care of the rest. We must do our part. Andrew did his part, he found ‘some’ food. Jesus does the rest.
Bring everything to Jesus and do your part responsibly. If we do, and do it in trust, Jesus will do the rest. The theme of the Divine Mercy, “Jesus I Trust In You!”
