This is one of my favorite Gospel passages. First of all, why did Peter say he was going fishing? Peter just witnessed Jesus suffer, die, and rise which is amazing, but Peter is just going fishing.
Peter was not sure of his life now, what is he to do, how does he respond to all these events, he just spent three years of his life with this man who he believed to be the messiah, but now what is there to do. What should he do, how should he live?
So, when we feel that way it is easy to revert back to what we know, back to our comforts in life. He was a fisherman, and that is what he knew best. Therefore, he goes for comfort and to make a living.
While they are fishing, they catch nothing. Jesus shows up on the scene and tells them to change position. Logic would say, as Peter thought, one side of boat or the other, what is the difference? There are no fish here. Yet when he listens, he catches 153 fish. A very large number.
There are a few meanings in this event. First, it shows us, that with Jesus everything is more fruitful and is blessed in excess. One of the things Jesus taught them over the three years was to do all things in union with Him. Without Jesus they caught nothing,
With Jesus’ guidance they catch 153 fish. Why the number 153? This is a significant number to them. Jesus had been telling them they would be fishers of men. At that time, they only knew of 153 different species of fish. 153 represents one of each type.
Like the fish there are many different peoples, different cultures and nationalities. As fishers of men they are to catch people form every culture. We, through our baptismal call, have also been asked, along with the clergy to bring the Gospel message to all the world. To every nationality.
Yet we have not. Some tribes still do not know Jesus. We have to fulfill the command. Believe it or not there are people right here where we live, who do not know Jesus or knows much about Him. Like Peter, Jesus will bless our efforts, but we have to begin the work. It is the basic theme. God created, and He left us in charge, and Jesus left us in charge to build the Body of Christ. We must continue to evangelize.
We must evangelize and teach about Jesus to our family, friends and community. Let us fulfill Jesus command, and be aides to the apostles, the clergy and help be fishers of men, and bring the Gospel to all people.
