Taize (pronounced the-ZAY) is a group method of Christian prayer that combines Bible readings with repetitve chant-like songs and meditative silence.
Developed during World War II by Swiss monk, Brother Roger, Taize is named for the French villiage where he hid refugees from Nazi Germany and prayed for reconciliation in Europe.
"Taize has the basic elements of Christianity: prayer, contemplationk, praise, Bible readings. It presents them in a format that is user friendly. " (The Rev. Stephen J.S. Smith)
Songs of Taize are introspective; they are genearlly one sentence or phrase repeated, such as "O Lord hear our prayer" or "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
Candles and Eastern Orthodox-style icons set the enviorment for the short (35-40 minute) prayer service.
Psalms and Scripture are part of Taize Prayer, as well as intercessions.
There is oral communal prayer and several minutes of silent indvidual prayer.
Experience the tranquility of Taize Prayer. Let it offer you a respite from stresses of daily life.
