Paul warned the Ephesian Christians of "savage wolves" from their own number who would distort the truth and lead astray any who follow them. Like Paul’s message, guarding Christians against false teaching is emphasized in the New Testament.
Jesus warns us against wolves in sheep's clothing and hireling shepherds who don't protect the sheep. Paul told Timothy to "stay on in Ephesus in order to warn certain people against teaching false doctrines.” He warned Timothy: "The time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but, following their own desires, will surround themselves with teachers who tickle their ears. They will stop listening to the truth and will wander off to fables.”
Our challenge is to do the same. To guard ourselves and others against false teachings.
How? The church has safeguarded the truths revealed by God the Father and Jesus. We should have a Catechism of the Catholic Church for reference when these situations arise to help explain and understand and defend our Faith.
We should read Scriptures often to know what the Word says. Another way is Mass, there is an ancient saying, “we believe as we pray.” The Mass prayers actually unfold our Faith throughout the year if we listen attentively to them. Also praying, through prayer we are graced with the understanding of Faith and mysteries.
Praying the Rosary helps us understand deeply the mystery of the incarnation and all of Jesus' life death and resurrection. Other devotions provide graces as well. The Scriptures, the Catechism, the Mass, and prayer helps us be aware of the wolves and the robbers.
Lastly we have to be willing to endure all Paul was willing to endure to pass on the truth. To endure the everyday obstacles and live the faith as an example and talk about it when appropriate.
Let us join Paul in protecting ourselves and others from false teaching and believing them.
