We know that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, and His life and teaching among us fulfills what was being slowly revealed and taught in the Old Testament.
The 10 commandments were the summary in the Old Testament of how to live, the guidelines to live a good life that God wanted. When Jesus comes, he takes them a step further in the New Testament. The 10 Commandments are not to be rules of dos and don’ts, but to be lived fully.
Just like the 10 Commandments were the summary of the Old Testament, the Beatitudes are the summary of the fulfillment of the 10 commandments in the New Testament. We know the 10 commandments, but let’s look at their fulfillment in the beatitudes.
1). Poor in spirit, which is knowing the need for God. For example, poor people monetarily, can't live without help from others. This Beatitude is knowing you can’t live without dependence on God and a relationship with God.
2). Mourn – to be sad over the sins of the world. In reality to truly know the value of all God created, physical world as well as others, etc. Also to be sad when people do not use them correctly and do not treat others correctly.
3). Meek – humility, pushing away pride, pride leads to all sins because pride places our self as the center.
4). Hunger and thirst for righteousness – just like needing food, hungering, and thirsting for what is right, to live as Jesus, the fulfillment of all of the commandments.
5). Merciful – To be like Jesus to meet others in their sinfulness and bring them to God, to help them be holier, not judging.
6). Pure in heart, - to want only what the Father wants, living fully in every move, thought, and word.
7). Peacemakers, to live the truths that were revealed from the beginning of time, the truths Jesus lived in the world. This is true peace, not peace like the world says, fluffy with each other, but peace to be in union with Jesus.
8). Persecuted – to understand not to live the world’s ways nor the devil’s ways and be ok with the persecution that will come from being different, being an example, an image of Jesus.
When we live these Beatitudes, there is no room for sin against the 10 commandments. We truly live the 10 Commandments.
In this way, we continue to live fulfilling the OT like Jesus. Let us truly look at our lives and see if we are living in the New Testament times, living the Beatitudes, and taking the dos and don’ts and fully living them out, for an eternity in heaven.
